Bernard Bateman MBE
Staff and Trustees of Ripon YMCA joined in the celebration of Bernard’s life at Ripon Cathedral yesterday. A few weeks ago we received the sad news that Bernard has passed away after an illness. As our President we wish to remember the contribution Bernard made to Ripon YMCA and the involvement he had with YMCA’s from a young age. Bernard grew up in South Wales and at 10 joined his local YMCA and quickly became involved with various committees and fundraising activities. After a few years when his family had moved to North Yorkshire he became closely involved with the YMCA in Ripon and Chaired the organisation for 29 years. During this time he was involved regionally and sat on the YMCA England National Executive. He was awarded the YMCA Red Triangle award for his involvement and was honored as our President following his significant fundraising efforts and service to Ripon YMCA. Bernard will be remembered fondly by staff, trustees and many young people who have lived at the YMCA or have been involved in our various projects and services. From tea dances, pantomimes, drama and table tennis to supporting young homeless people to gain independence. Our Chair Sean McKibben expresses gratitude for Bernard’s longstanding involvement with Ripon YMCA saying “I met Bernard when he attended Trustee meetings and I was impressed by his knowledge, dedication and passion for Ripon YMCA and the work it does. He was rightly honoured with the position of President and has a building named after him, so will always be remembered when we talk about Bateman House”. Thank you Bernard Here is a photo of Bernard in his Harrogate Mayoral Chains at our Dinner and Dance in 2018 with some of our trustees. Comments are closed.
